“Whenever I Feel Afraid” – Tuesday Doses to Inspire & Encourage!

It has been said that art imitates life. Well that’s true. But it’s also true that life imitates art. That is if we’re open and willing to see the significant connections to be found between great art and our lives. In the case of today’s “Dose” for inspiration and encouragement; the art form comes from both the literary world and the world of theater and film.Original_movie_poster_for_the_film_The_King_and_I

Remember that great Broadway play and film, The King and I? Set in the kingdom of Siam (now Thailand), it’s the true story of an English widow who, with her son, moves to Siam to teach the many children of the King. In film the King was immortalized by Yul Brynner and Anna by Deborah Kerr. The incredible music by Rodgers and Hammerstein never grows old.

When I sat to write today’s post, I recalled a number of recent Facebook posts with “fear” as the subject. Other posts that urged us to step out of the comfort zone; take risks and even experience failure as the prerequisite for success. I don’t know if I’m willing to encourage that much; but I am feeling an urge to suggest some ways to overcome the ‘fear factor’.

So without further ado, let me say that this post is life inspired by art – the art of song. A song with lyrics that have more than melody within. For the inspired words are ones that can help us step over fear and doubt and move forward without hesitation!

Whenever I feel afraid
I hold my head erect
And whistle a happy tune
So no one will suspect I’m afraid

While shivering in my shoes
I strike a careless pose
And whistle a happy tune
And no one ever knows I’m afraid

The result of this deception
Is very strange to tell
For when I fool the people
I fear I fool myself as well

I whistle a happy tune
And every single time
The happiness in the tune
Convinces me that I’m not afraid

Make believe you’re brave
And the trick will take you far
You may be as brave
As you make believe you are

You may be as brave
As you make believe you are

While shivering in my shoes
I strike a careless pose
And whistle a happy tune
And no one ever knows I’m afraid

The result of this deception
Is very strange to tell
For when I fool the people
I fear I fool myself as well

I whistle a happy tune
And every single time
The happiness in the tune
Convinces me that I’m not afraid

Make believe you’re brave
And the trick will take you far
You may be as brave
As you make believe you are

Sound a bit trite? Well one won’t know until one tries it. So today, if a bit of fear pops up in your life; pucker up, whistle and keep right on going. . .

Blessings,

Linda
