Enjoy a Few Moments of Summer

Have you noticed that it is more difficult to stay focused on your business in the summertime?  Do you find yourself wanting to sit out in the sun, take some mini-vacations, or simply spend time with friends?  You can enjoy the warmer weather without losing sight of what is important to you. It’s simply a matter of juggling your schedule.

“Your main competitors are not others in your industry. Your main competitors are distractions. Don’t let them beat you – stay focused.” Darren Hardy

Owning a business is time-consuming. It is easy to put in way too many hours during the week trying to get everything accomplished. If you are anything like me, it is easy to start working on a project and work late into the night. With only one month left of summer, I want to discuss a few ways to get everything done and still have time to enjoy the warmth and the sunshine.

Get Outside

For the month of August, create a schedule that allows you time outside each day. Perhaps that means eating your lunch outside or making yourself take a couple of 15-minute breaks during the day to walk around your building. Let the sun shine on your face. Breathe in the fresh air. Find a coffee shop or restaurant with outdoor seating and Wi-Fi and work away from your office. It is important that you not become distracted, but just an hour or two outside can make a big difference in your attitude and energy levels.

“Set goals and stay focused on your priorities.”  David K. Reynolds

Adjust Your Hours

If possible, adjust your office hours to “summer hours.” Start and end earlier in the day. This will allow you an extra hour in the evening to work in your yard, spend time with your family, or cook your dinner and eat it outside. Most of your customers will understand as long as they know your schedule change.

Hire Some Help

Summertime is a great time to add a staff member to lighten your load. College and high school students can be hired a few hours per week to allow you a little more free time. Use your time wisely so that the investment is not wasted.

Take That Vacation

There is nothing wrong with taking a vacation during the summer.  Notify your clients in advance the days that you will be unavailable and enjoy your time off. You don’t have to leave town. You can relax around your home, schedule time with friends and family or simply “unplug” from the world for a few days. The main goal is to relax and recharge during your time off.

Time goes by so quickly. Before we know it, the temperatures will be cooling and we will be talking about ice and snow. Adjust your schedule this month to allow you to enjoy a few moments of summer. Life is way too short to spend all day indoors. By taking some time every day to breathe in the sunshine, you will notice that your entire attitude will be brighter.

Have a great week!
