This week we turned the calendar to July. Can you believe that half of 2017 is already behind us? Have you checked to see how you are doing on the goals you set at the beginning of the year? Plan to take a few moments this week to review your goals and make sure you are still headed in the right direction. But, before you do that, it’s time to celebrate the birth of our nation. Happy 241st Birthday, America!!
With July 4th falling on a Tuesday this year, many of us have the opportunity for a really long holiday weekend. As we gather with friends and family to celebrate the July 4th holiday, how many of us even know why we celebrate? Independence Day is so much more than hot dogs, hamburgers, family gatherings, parades, fireworks and a three or four day weekend. This week I will take just a few minutes to discuss the reason we celebrate our independence.
“One flag, one land, one heart, one hand, one nation evermore!” Oliver Wendell Homes
Every year we, as a nation, celebrate Independence Day on the Fourth of July. What is Independence Day? July 4, 1776, represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. But in truth, it was July 2, 1776, that the Continental Congress decided to declare independence. After working on the wording of the Declaration of Independence for a few days, the final wording was approved and signed July 4, 1776.
Have you ever wondered how July 4th became a national holiday?
For many years, no one celebrated our nations’ independence. When Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on July 4, 1826, many thought that it might be an important date to be celebrated. In 1870, nearly 100 years after the Declaration of Independence was written, approved, and signed, Congress declared July 4th to be a national holiday
My challenge for you this week is the following:
As you gather with friends and family to celebrate Independence Day, take a few moments and think about the thousands of men and women who have given their lives for our freedom. Reflect on the fact that we have so many freedoms and, take a few moments to be grateful for all of the blessings in our lives. We are truly a blessed nation. One nation under God.
Have a fabulous week!
