As we begin the second month of 2018, the majority of people who set new year resolutions have already broken them. As the year began, they set lofty goals without a plan of how to meet them. When things got tough, they abandoned them. This week I want to discuss setting goals and creating steps that will help you meet those goals.
I talk about goals often. I set daily, weekly and monthly goals along with quarterly, semi-annually and annual goals. I need goals to keep me focused. I use goals to measure success in my business. Without goals, I would have no idea if my business was where I wanted it to be.
“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” Tony Robbins
Work on Your Goals Everyday
Once you have created your goals, post them where you will see them everyday. Hang a copy in your office, on your bathroom mirror and create a vision board as motivation. The goals you set were important enough to make the list. It is just as important to make sure that you work and achieve them.
Have an Accountability Partner
A great way to stay focused and reach your goals is to have an accountability partner. You should check in with them weekly and meet in person on a monthly basis. Knowing that someone wants you to succeed and is there to lean on when things are overwhelming is priceless and may just be the push you need to make you successful in reaching your goals.
Breakdown Goals into Tasks
Goals are easier to achieve if they are broken down into attainable tasks. Too often our goals are too ambitious and become intimidating and unattainable. The end goal should be clear and concise and steps should be mapped out in order to achieve them.
Celebrate the Milestones
It is important to celebrate when you accomplish a goal. The goals you set were intentional and had a purpose. The fact that you stayed focused and met that goal is something to celebrate for a moment and then you have to remember to get back to work!
“If you set goals and go after them with all the determination you can muster, your gifts will take you places that will amaze you.” Les Brown
My challenge to you this week is as follows:
Look at your 2018 goals. For many, it will be the first time you’ve looked that them since you created them! It’s not too late to begin working on them. If they are too big, break them into achievable steps. Find an accountability partner and ask them to keep you focused and on track. And finally, don’t forget to celebrate your victories!
