It’s Not “Just A Pen”

When I am asked about the promotional products I sell, usually someone will ask about my pens. “Do you sell a decent pen?” Or, “I’m really picky about my pens, I doubt there is one that you sell that I like because I only like G2 pens” to which I reply, “great because I sell those.”  For the next few weeks, I am going to choose one promotional product about of the hundreds of thousands I offer and discuss some facts about the product and the benefits of using it to help brand your company.  This week I am going to talk about what I feel is the most popular of all of my promotional products – the pen.

First some fun facts…

Have you ever wondered how far a pen will write? The average pen writes approximately 45,000 words or around 2 miles.  That’s a lot of writing!

There are 5 types of pens – ballpoint, fountain, roller ball, soft time and specialty pens. Everyone has their favorite!

The ballpoint pen was created in 1938, just before World War II. During World War II, the pilots used ballpoint pens because they do not leak at high altitudes!

When you are handed a new pen, what is the first thing you write? Studies show that 95% of those who are handed a pen write their own name. Are you a part of the 95% or do you stand out from the crowd?

An average of 125 ballpoint pens are sold globally every second.  That’s a lot of pens!  How many pens do you own?

Approximately 3.4 billion pens have been imported into the United States since 2008.

Ballpoint pens do not work well for approximately 10% of the world.  “Lefties” tend to push on their pens as they write and do not pull the ball across the paper. Gel ink is also tough for lefties. They tend to rub their hand through it as they write, smearing the ink.

It is challenging to find the perfect pen. I always suggest that my clients choose several based on color, style, and price. Then I order samples of those pens for my client to use so that they can get a feel for how it writes and how it feels in their hand. I can’t imagine ordering pens to represent your company without knowing how they write!

Pens serve an important role in our lives. We use them to write down items we want to remember, like dates, events, and appointments. We use them to write letters, notes, and cards to family, friends, and clients.  They are an inexpensive way to get your message to the masses. The average pen has 7 owners and you never know how far a pen will travel. A few years ago while my husband and I were traveling, we stopped at an Olive Garden in Nashville, Tennessee and enjoyed a nice meal. When the server brought us our check, we opened the folder to find MY COMPANY PEN inside for me to sign the receipt. It had traveled from Indianapolis, Indiana to Nashville, Tennessee!

For pennies per imprint, you can share your message with a promotional product that will be used several times a day. When choosing your next promotional product, plan to include pens as one of your items.
